What is PRAN?
PRAN stands for Permanent Retirement Account Number, which is an account number for the subscriber of National Pension Scheme holder. When you enroll for an NPS scheme, you get a PRAN number which is valid for lifetime.
What is NPS ?
NPS stands for National Pension System which was introduced by Central Government to help the individuals of India and NRIs having income in the form of pension at the retirement time to take care of themselves and their dependents.
Who can register for NPS Account?
All the citizens of India including NRIs can register for an NPS scheme and open an NPS account and get a PRAN number.
Types of NPS accounts
There are mainly two types of NPS accounts
Tier-I Account
This a permanent retirement account which is used to contribute regularly till the date of retirement. The amount of contribution is invested by the fund manager choosen by individuals. You can only withdrawal 25 percent of your actual contribution after 3 years of contribution in some conditions like marriage, medical emergency etc.
Minimum contribution per year is 1000.00
Tier-II Account
This is an optional account and you can invest in this account. You can withdrawal your contribution without any restriction and condition. If you want Tier II account you must have a tier I account first.
How to register online for NPS account?
Here is complete process of online registration for NPS account to get PRAN number using NSDL eNPS.
Go to https://enps.nsdl.com
Click on National Pension System menu as shown below and click on Register for NPS
In next page choose your desired account type like Individual, Government, Corporate or NRI which you prefer. Here we wil go through Government subscriber. The click on Register Now for Government subscriber.
Next, a pop-up window will open as you can see named Initial Process Registration. Fill the required details like Date of birth, PAN number, Mobile number and email carefully and click on BEGIN REGISTRATION
If you asked a pop-up message for your concern to fetch details using CKYC, Clicke Yes. If you want to proceed with Aadhaar then click No. You will be redirected to New Subscriber Registration page.
Choose Register with Aadhaar and Select option Aadhaar Number and fill all the required details.
Click on Terms and Conditions and Accept. Then click on Confirm button.
You will get OPT on Mobile and Email you provided. Enter OTP.
After successful OTP verification you will get ACK (Acknowledgment ID). Note it down and Click on Continue.
You will be redirected to Verify Details page. Your data will be shown fetched from UIDAI. Check and verify it carefully. Enter all required details and Click on Confirm.
Next, Click on Add Bank Details to enter bank details and Add Nominee Details to enter nominee details, Select Account Type (Add Tier II Account with Tier I details or Set it up later) then Click on PROCEED.
Nex, Fill all the required details on Personal Details Account page. Enter FATCA Details and Click on PROCEED.
Upload APPOINTMENT LETTER OR OFFER LETTER OR JOINING LETTER whichever you have. Then Click on PROCEED.
Check the Declaration by the Subscriber check box and Click on CONFIRM.
Verify OTP by which method you want. Please prefer OTP Authentication for easy verification. Then Click on CONFIRM.
You will get Confirmation for Successful Registration for NPS and will get message along with email given by you. You will get an option to download the Registration Form. Download the Registration Form and print first 2 pages and submit it to your DDO for Approve Registration and PRAN Generation.
Once the Registration Process is completed, the request will be available for Nodal Officer to approve it. Whenever the Nodal Officer will approve it, PRAN will be generated and you will get the notification.
